The Problem

Unsorted Aggregate Has One Buyer. Graded Aggregate Has Three.

Raw sand and gravel from a pit, river run, or quarry operation comes out of the ground mixed — fine sand, pea gravel, mid-range stone, and coarse aggregate all together. In that condition, the pile has one use and one buyer: whoever takes run-of-pit material at the lowest per-ton price.
Screened and graded aggregate is a different product. A 2-deck vibratory screening plant separates the same raw material into three distinct fractions in a single pass. Fine sand goes one place — concrete sand, mason sand, bedding sand. Mid-range aggregate goes to another — pea gravel, drainage stone, pipe bedding material. Coarse aggregate stockpiles separately — drainage rock, base stone, decorative applications. Three products, three prices, three buyers.
For aggregate producers running a pit or quarry operation, the screening plant is not optional — it is the machine that makes the product sellable. A raw pile of mixed aggregate generates revenue only as run-of-pit fill. A screened and sorted operation sells four or five products at different price points from the same raw material.
For site contractors with natural aggregate on-site, the same logic applies in the other direction. Screened aggregate from a site grading operation can replace aggregate purchases for sub-base, drainage, and backfill on the same project. The material is already on-site — sorting it is what makes it usable.

How It Works

How Aggregate Screening Works

A vibratory screening plant is a 2-deck screen — two flat screen surfaces, one above the other, vibrating continuously. Raw aggregate loads into the feed hopper and moves across the top deck first. Material larger than the top deck aperture rolls across and discharges as the overs fraction. Material smaller than the top deck drops through to the bottom deck, where it divides again: material larger than the bottom deck aperture becomes the middles fraction; material smaller than both decks falls through as the fines fraction. Load

Load raw sand and gravel, river run aggregate, or natural pit material into the screening plant’s hopper with a wheel loader or conveyor. The CD-410 hopper holds 5.5 cubic yards. The CD-516 hopper holds 18 cubic yards — production operations feed the CD-516 by conveyor or high-volume wheel loader cycle.

Screen

Material moves across the vibrating 2-deck screen. Top deck aperture size determines the overs/mids split. Bottom deck aperture determines the mids/fines split. Screen media aperture sizes are customer-specified based on your target gradation — we spec the right media for your material and output requirements. Call 770-433-2670.

Separate

Three fractions separate simultaneously: overs discharge from the top deck via the overs conveyor, middles discharge from the bottom deck via the middles conveyor, fines fall below the bottom deck onto the fines conveyor. Each conveyor stockpiles its fraction at a different point around the machine.

Stockpile

Three clean stockpiles at separate points around the screening plant. On-screen time is one pass for most natural aggregate applications — the material is already in a crushable range and the screen separates it without requiring recirculation. Oversize material that needs additional reduction can feed to a jaw crusher upstream of the screen.

What the Screening Plant Produces

The three fractions from a 2-deck screening plant are determined by your screen media aperture sizes. We spec the right media for your target gradation and material. The fractions below are representative of typical sand and gravel operations — your actual output depends on your feed material and the screen sizes we specify for your application.
Fines — Below bottom deck (typically fine sand to 3/8″)

Concrete Sand, Mason Sand, Bedding Sand

Concrete sand, mason sand, manufactured sand, bedding sand for pipe and utility work, USGA-spec topdressing sand (at appropriate gradation — confirm with a turf agronomist for specification applications). The finest and often highest-value fraction per ton in markets with demand for clean washed sand.
Middles — Between decks (typically 3/8″ to 3/4″ or 1″)

Pea Gravel, Chip Stone, Drainage Aggregate

Pea gravel, chip stone, drainage aggregate, pipe bedding material, decorative gravel, landscape stone. The middles fraction typically commands the highest volume demand in residential and commercial landscape aggregate markets.
Overs — Above top deck (typically 1″ and above)

Coarse Drainage Rock, Base Stone, Riprap

Coarse drainage rock, base stone, riprap (at larger sizes), decorative stone. On aggregate operations with blasted or river rock feed, the overs fraction may include material that needs secondary crushing — that material recirculates to the jaw crusher before returning to the screen.

Vibratory vs. Trommel

Vibratory Screening Plant or Trommel Screen for Aggregate — Which Is Right?

Both machine types separate aggregate into fractions. For aggregate production at commercial scale, the vibratory screening plant (CD-410 or CD-516) is the standard. Here is why, and when the trommel makes sense.

Where Vibratory Screening Plants Have the Advantage

Throughput at production volume. The CD-410 and CD-516 handle production aggregate volume that exceeds the throughput of the CZ trommel screens. For a gravel pit or quarry running continuous production, the vibratory screen’s throughput capacity and hopper size match the operation scale.
Dry, clean aggregate. Vibratory screens perform best on dry material with a consistent gradation. Natural pit sand and gravel — particularly dry run material or material that has been stockpiled and dried — moves efficiently across a flat vibrating screen deck and separates cleanly.
Blasted and angular rock. The CD-516 lists blasted rock and river rock as specific applications. Sharp, angular material feeds well into the CD-516’s hopper and across the punch plate top deck. A trommel drum handling large angular blasted rock at high volume wears the drum faster than a flat screen deck handles the same material.
Three separated stockpiles with reach. The CD-410 and CD-516 have three built-on conveyors that extend the stockpile reach around the machine. The CZ trommel’s stockpile arrangement is more compact.

Where Trommel Screens Have the Advantage

Wet and dirty material. If the aggregate feed is wet, clay-contaminated, or has significant fine material that might blind a flat screen, the rotating drum handles it better. Material tumbles through the drum continuously, which prevents the blinding that wet fines cause on flat screen surfaces.
Smaller scale and portability. The CZ MDS MIDI at 2,200 lbs and $38,900 is the right machine for a small landscape stone operation, a small pit, or a site contractor who screens aggregate occasionally. The capital cost and mobilization weight of the CD-410 and CD-516 are appropriate for dedicated aggregate operations running regular production volume.

What is the apron feeder option on the CD-516?

The CD-516’s standard configuration includes a 55-inch belt feeder. The steel apron feeder replaces the belt feeder with a heavy-duty steel plate conveyor designed for abrasive, heavy, wet, or angular material — river rock, blasted quarry rock, and aggregate with significant moisture or clay content. Steel apron feeders handle material that would wear or stall a belt feeder prematurely. If your feed material is abrasive or wet, the apron feeder option adds durability at the feed point.

What size screen media do I need for my aggregate?

Screen media aperture size depends on your target output gradation. For concrete sand, the bottom deck is typically at fine sand specification. For pea gravel as a mid fraction, the top deck is set at the pea gravel upper limit and the bottom deck at the lower limit. Can I pair a jaw crusher with the CD-516 for a quarry circuit?

Yes. The CD-516 lists pre- and post-crusher screening as a specific application. In a quarry circuit, the CD-516 can screen blasted rock before the jaw crusher (removing fines that would reduce crusher throughput without needing to go through the jaw) and screen crusher output after the jaw (sorting crushed material into three graded fractions for stockpiling or sale). For standard commercial aggregate operations running continuous production volume, the CD-410 handles the throughput. For high-volume production aggregate, river rock, or operations where the screening plant is fed by conveyor or high-cycle wheel loaders at production pace, the CD-516’s larger hopper and screen area prevent the screening plant from becoming the throughput constraint.

Can the CZ trommel screens handle sand and aggregate?

Yes. The CZ MDS MIDI and MDS BIG list sand and aggregate among their applications and handle light aggregate at throughput ranges of 25 to 60 tons per hour depending on model and material. The trommel handles wet or dirty aggregate better than a flat vibratory screen because the rotating drum prevents blinding. For smaller aggregate operations, landscape stone, and applications where portability and lower entry price are priorities, the CZ trommel is the right machine.
