How It Works

How On-Site Concrete Crushing Works

A jaw crusher uses two opposing manganese-steel jaw plates — one fixed, one moving — to compress feed material and fracture it downward through the crushing chamber. The gap at the bottom of the chamber (the closed-side setting, or CSS) determines output size. CSS adjusts hydraulically on all three Evortle CT models without tools or manual adjustment.

FEED

Load concrete rubble into the jaw crusher’s hopper with an excavator or wheel loader. The CT-535 accepts material up to 20 inches. The CT-740 accepts up to 28 inches. The CT-850 accepts up to 32 inches. For most commercial demolition material — full-depth slabs, columns, footings, foundation sections — no pre-breaking is needed on the CT-740 or CT-850. The CT-740’s intelligent level control monitors the crusher chamber and automatically adjusts feed rate to prevent overfilling.

Crush

Concrete enters the jaw chamber and compresses between the fixed and moving jaw plates. The moving jaw swings in an elliptical arc, applying progressive force to fracture material and advance it toward the discharge opening. CSS adjusts hydraulically from the wireless remote — no wrench, no manual shimming. The CT-740 and CT-850 cross-belt magnets pull rebar off the discharge belt continuously. Rebar does not wrap on a jaw crusher.

Screen

Crushed concrete from the jaw discharge feeds directly into a Screen USA CD-410 or CD-516 vibratory screening plant. The 2-deck screen sorts material into three separated fractions: overs, middles, and fines. Three built-on conveyors stockpile each fraction independently at separate points around the machine.

Stockpile

Fines (0–10mm) go as compactable structural fill and sub-base. Middles go as road base and drainage aggregate. Overs return to the crusher for a second pass or stockpile as large drainage rock. Nothing leaves the site. Nothing needs to be purchased to replace it.
The jaw crusher alone produces a single crushed fraction at whatever CSS is set. A screening plant is the addition that separates it into three usable, sellable products.

What Crushed Concrete Is Used For

Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) at 0-50mm from a jaw crusher meets the gradation for road base and structural fill in most state DOT specifications. The value of the output depends on what fraction you produce and what you do with it.

Single fraction — jaw only

0–50mm Road Base

Most common setting for commercial demolition contractors. Meets road base spec for most DOT applications, compacts well as structural fill, and is usable as drainage aggregate in pipe trenches. A single mixed-gradation pile that eliminates disposal cost. Does not command the same per-ton value as separated fractions.
Fines — below bottom deck

Structural Fill and Sub-Base

Typically 0–10mm. Compactable structural fill, sub-base under concrete pours, grading fill. The fines fraction from a commercial concrete demolition job can go directly under the new slab — material that would have been purchased as sub-base is produced from what was a disposal cost.
Middles — between decks

Road Base and Drainage Aggregate

Road base, drainage aggregate, pipe trench bedding, parking lot sub-base. The middles fraction typically commands the highest value per ton when sold because it meets the most common graded aggregate specifications.
CT-740 and CT-850 only

Rebar — Ferrous Scrap

Cross-belt magnet separates rebar from the discharge belt automatically. Rebar bends and passes through the jaw chamber, exits on the discharge belt, and the magnet pulls it off. On a large reinforced commercial slab, the rebar pile beside the machine is a separate revenue line.

Why a Jaw Crusher for Concrete Recycling?

Rebar Handling — The Deciding Factor

Impact crushers use high-speed rotating blow bars to fracture material. Rebar wraps around the rotor. A rebar incident means stopping the machine, opening the housing, and manually cutting the rebar free — on a reinforced commercial slab with heavy rebar mat, this happens regularly. It is not an exception. It is a scheduled interruption.
Jaw crushers compress material between two plates. Rebar bends and passes through the crushing chamber. The cross-belt magnet separates it from the discharge belt automatically. No rotor. No wrap. No manual intervention. The machine does not stop for rebar.

Wear Cost on Reinforced Concrete

Impact crusher blow bars wear faster than jaw plates on rebar-heavy material. Jaw plates are reversible — one set has two wear faces, effectively doubling service life before replacement. At current wear part pricing, jaw plates on reinforced concrete run lower cost per ton than blow bars on equivalent throughput.

Output Quality

Impact crushers produce a more cubical, angular aggregate — preferable for asphalt production and certain concrete mix designs where particle shape specification matters. Jaw crushers produce a flakier output that meets ASTM D2940 road base specification and performs well for structural fill, drainage aggregate, and sub-base. For the vast majority of C&D concrete recycling applications, jaw output quality is the right product for the most common end uses.

When an Impact Crusher Is the Better Choice

On clean hard rock without rebar — granite, limestone, basalt — where the application requires a cubical aggregate particle for asphalt or high-specification concrete production, an impact crusher produces a better-shaped product. Can a jaw crusher handle reinforced concrete with rebar?

Yes. Reinforced concrete is the primary application for the Evortle CT-740 and CT-850. Rebar passes through the jaw crushing chamber without wrapping around the jaw mechanism. The integrated cross-belt magnet on the CT-740 and CT-850 separates ferrous material from the discharge belt automatically — you do not need to sort material before feeding or pick rebar from the output. The CT-535 handles reinforced concrete with the optional cross-belt magnet (+$7,000).

What output sizes does crushed concrete come in?

Output size is determined by the closed-side setting (CSS), which adjusts hydraulically on all three CT models. At 0-50mm CSS, output is road base and structural fill grade. At wider settings, output is a coarser scalping fraction. Paired with a CD-410 or CD-516 vibratory screening plant, the crushed output separates into three fractions — fines, middles, and overs — each in a different size class with different applications.

What is recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) used for?

At 0-50mm output, RCA meets the gradation for road base and structural fill in most state DOT specifications. Common applications include road base and sub-base, structural fill behind retaining walls, parking lot base course, pipe trench bedding, and drainage aggregate. In some state specifications, RCA is accepted as a partial replacement for virgin aggregate in concrete production. Do I need a screening plant with my jaw crusher?

It depends on what you are doing with the output. The jaw crusher alone produces a single crushed fraction at whatever CSS you set — usable as road base or structural fill without further processing. If you have a buyer for graded aggregate, a DOT spec to meet, or a job that needs separated fractions, you need a screening plant. The full circuit — crusher plus screening plant — is the setup that eliminates both the disposal cost and the aggregate purchase on the same project.

How many tons per hour can the CT-850 process?

The CT-850 processes 65 tons per hour at 0-50mm CSS and up to 95 tons per hour at a wider CSS setting (0-110mm). Over an 8-hour shift at 65 t/h, that is 520 tons of processed concrete. The CT-740 processes 45 to 55 tons per hour at 0-50mm. The CT-535 processes 20 tons per hour at 0-50mm.

What is the difference between a jaw crusher and an impact crusher for concrete recycling?

The critical difference is rebar handling. Impact crusher blow bars wrap on rebar — stopping the machine to clear a rotor is a regular event on reinforced concrete work. Jaw crushers compress material between two plates and rebar passes through without wrapping. The cross-belt magnet on the CT-740 and CT-850 then separates it from the discharge belt automatically. Impact crushers produce a more cubical output that is preferable for asphalt aggregate and high-specification concrete production. Jaw crusher output meets road base and structural fill specifications for most C&D recycling applications. For reinforced concrete work specifically, a jaw crusher is the lower-maintenance, lower-wear-cost choice.

Can I crush cinder blocks and masonry in a jaw crusher?

Yes. Cinder block, brick, and masonry process well in all three CT models. Masonry is softer than reinforced concrete and does not present the same rebar complication. The CT-535 handles cinder block and masonry at 20 tons per hour with smaller feed sizes. The CT-740 and CT-850 handle any masonry feed that fits the jaw opening. Output from crushed masonry is usable as structural fill and drainage aggregate.
