The Problem

Raw Topsoil Is a Disposal Problem. Screened Topsoil Is a Product.

Excavated topsoil comes out of the ground mixed with rocks, roots, clods, and debris. In that condition, it has one destination: the haul truck. Most contractors pay to dispose of it or pay to move it somewhere that will take it, then buy screened topsoil for the landscape phase of the same project.

The gap between what excavated topsoil costs to haul and what screened topsoil costs to buy back runs $15 to $50 per ton depending on your market. On a commercial site development project generating 500 yards of excavated topsoil, that gap represents $12,000 to $30,000 in material that was already on-site.

A topsoil screener closes that gap. Raw topsoil feeds into the machine with a wheel loader or excavator. Rocks, roots, and oversize debris separate to one pile. Screened topsoil falls below the screen and stockpiles separately. The screen size determines the product gradation. The volume determines which screener makes sense.

How On-Site Topsoil Screening Works

Load

Feed raw topsoil, compost, or excavated soil into the screener’s hopper or drum with a wheel loader or small excavator. The CZ MDS MIDI and BIG feed directly into the drum opening. The CD-410 feeds from a 5.5 cubic yard hopper.

Screen

In a trommel screen, the drum rotates continuously. Fines fall through mesh as material tumbles. The CZ dual-screen design runs two mesh sizes back-to-back, separating two gradations in one pass. In a vibratory screen, material moves across a 2-deck vibrating screen with three built-on conveyors.

Separate

Screened topsoil falls below the drum or through the screen decks. Oversize material discharges at the drum end or overs conveyor. With the CZ dual-screen, two fines fractions discharge simultaneously to separate piles.

Stockpile

Screened product stockpiles below the drum on the CZ, or via built-on conveyors on the CD-410. Overs pile separately. Nothing leaves mixed together. Each fraction is a distinct, usable product.

What Screened Topsoil Is Used For

Output quality depends on mesh size, material moisture, and debris content. Tighter mesh produces finer, cleaner product. Larger mesh produces faster throughput at a coarser gradation.

Nursery and Premium Landscape Grade

Clean, fine-textured topsoil with no visible rock or root debris. Used for nursery growing medium, premium residential landscaping, garden bed topdressing, and quality-sensitive commercial landscape applications. Throughput is lower at this setting.
1/2"

Standard Landscape Grade

The most common topsoil product for residential and commercial landscaping. Rocks, roots, and debris above 1/2″ are removed. Suitable for lawn establishment, planting beds, and general landscape grading. Higher throughput than 3/8″.
3/4"

General Use and Bulk Topsoil

For slope restoration, erosion control, rough grading, and bulk topsoil applications where visible pebbles are acceptable. Highest throughput of the available mesh sizes for standard topsoil. Some buyers specify this for fill beneath sod installations.

Light Debris Removal

Removes large rocks, root balls, and major debris. Used when the goal is material salvage rather than producing a finished landscape product. Not a finished product for most landscape applications. Highest throughput.

Two Fractions Simultaneously — One Machine, One Pass

The CZ MDS MIDI and MDS BIG run two mesh sizes back-to-back inside the same drum. For example: 3/8″ inner screen and 3/4″ outer screen. Fine topsoil (under 3/8″) and medium topsoil (3/8″ to 3/4″) separate into two stockpiles in a single pass. Overs above 3/4″ discharge at the drum end. Three-way separation from one machine in one pass.

Trommel vs. Vibratory

Trommel Screen or Vibratory Screen for Topsoil — Which Is Right for Your Operation?

Both trommel screens and vibratory screens separate topsoil from oversize debris. They behave differently on organic-heavy material, wet topsoil, and high-volume applications. The choice is not about which technology is better in general — it is about which one matches your material and your operation.

Where Trommel Screens Have the Advantage

Wet and clay-heavy topsoil. Flat vibratory screens can blind — clay and wet fines stick to the screen surface and block the apertures. A rotating drum keeps material tumbling continuously. The tumbling action prevents blinding in wet or clay conditions that would slow a flat screen significantly.
Roots and organic material. Roots and fibrous debris tend to lay flat on a vibratory screen and screen through at sizes larger than the aperture. In a rotating drum, roots and fibrous material roll toward the discharge end. Trommel output is cleaner on root-heavy material.
Cost and portability for pure topsoil operations. The CZ MDS MIDI at $38,900 and 2,200 lbs is purpose-built for topsoil and compost. For a landscape contractor whose sole use case is topsoil screening, the CZ is the right-sized machine at the right price.

Where a Vibratory Screen Has the Advantage

High rock content and abrasive material. Boney topsoil — heavily contaminated with rock, stone, and coarse debris — wears drum screens faster than their design intent. The CD-410’s flat punch plate top deck handles abrasive material better for sustained high-volume processing.
Dual-use operations. If you also screen C&D debris, crushed aggregate, river rock, or log yard material, the CD-410 handles all of those applications. A dedicated topsoil trommel does not. For a contractor who screens topsoil on some projects and needs a C&D circuit on others, the CD-410 covers both without compromise.
Three separated fractions with conveyor reach. The CD-410’s 2-deck screen produces three separated fractions stockpiled independently by three built-on conveyors. For operations that need precise three-way separation at high volume with maximum conveyor reach, the CD-410 has more flexibility.

Common Questions About Topsoil Screening

What mesh size do I need to produce landscape-grade topsoil?

For standard residential and commercial landscape topsoil, 1/2″ (12mm) is the most common specification — removes visible rocks, roots, and debris while maintaining good throughput. For premium nursery-grade or fine landscape topsoil, 3/8″ (10mm) produces a cleaner, finer product but at lower throughput. For bulk topsoil or slope restoration where a coarser product is acceptable, 3/4″ (19mm) runs faster. The CZ MDS MIDI and MDS BIG are available in 3/8″, 1/2″, 5/8″, 3/4″, and 1″ mesh. Screen sizes on the CD-410 are customer-specified for each application — call us to spec the right media.

Can a trommel screen handle wet or clay-heavy topsoil?

Yes. Trommel screens handle wet and clay-heavy topsoil better than flat vibratory screens in most conditions. The rotating drum keeps material tumbling continuously, which prevents the blinding (mesh clogging) that wet clay causes on stationary screen surfaces. Very high-clay material — tight clay that does not break apart easily — can reduce throughput on any screen type. If your topsoil is extremely clay-bound and does not break with a loader bucket, pre-mixing with drier material or reducing feed rate allows the drum to work more effectively.

What is “boney” topsoil?

Boney topsoil is the industry term for topsoil with a high percentage of rocks, stones, and coarse debris mixed in — common in glaciated regions, rocky soil types, blasted overburden from site grading, and topsoil stripped from areas with significant stone content. Boney topsoil is harder on trommel screen drums than on flat vibratory screens. For consistently boney material, the CD-410 with a heavy-duty top deck is the more durable option. For topsoil that is primarily soil with occasional rocks, the CZ trommel handles it well.

Does the CZ screen require 480V power on-site?

The CZ MDS MIDI and MDS BIG run on 480V 3-phase electric power. If 480V power is not available on-site, a 13 HP Honda GX390 genset is available as an option (+$6,000) that makes the machine fully self-contained. The genset mounts to the machine — no separate generator trailer required. If your sites reliably have 480V power available from a temporary power service or permanent connection, the base machine without the genset is sufficient.

How many tons per hour does the CZ MDS MIDI produce on topsoil?

The CZ MDS MIDI produces 25 to 50 tons per hour on standard topsoil, depending on mesh size, material moisture, and debris content. At 3/8″ mesh on moist topsoil with moderate rock content, throughput is toward the lower end of the range. At 3/4″ or 1″ mesh on dry topsoil with lower debris content, throughput is toward the upper end. Can I screen compost and mulch with the same machine as topsoil?

Yes. The CZ MDS MIDI and MDS BIG handle topsoil, compost, mulch, and light aggregate with the same machine. Screen size swap for different materials. Compost typically screens well at 1/2″ or 5/8″ to remove uncomposted chunks and woody material. The CD-410 also handles compost and mulch but is a larger investment for operations that only screen organic material; it is better suited when topsoil, compost, and C&D material are all part of the same operation.

What is the difference between a trommel and a vibratory screen for topsoil?

A trommel screen uses a rotating drum. Material tumbles through the drum, and fines fall through the mesh as material rolls along the drum length.
