Mixed Demolition Debris Costs More to Haul and Produces Less When Hauled

Clean concrete is a straightforward disposal problem — one material type, consistent density, predictable tipping fee. Mixed C&D debris is a harder problem. A building teardown generates concrete, masonry, cinder block, brick, structural fill, and hard rubble in the same load. Some facilities take it at standard tipping fees. Others charge a premium for mixed loads or reject them outright, depending on contamination level.
The result is that mixed demolition debris often costs more to dispose of than clean concrete — and produces nothing on the back end. It leaves the site as a cost and arrives at the landfill as landfill.
The jaw crusher circuit changes that. Concrete, masonry, brick, CMU, and hard rubble all process through the CT-740 or CT-850 jaw crusher. What comes out is road base-grade crushed material — not as clean or consistent as crushed concrete alone, but useful as structural fill, drainage aggregate, and sub-base material on most site applications. Nothing that was crushable has to leave the site as disposal.

How On-Site C&D Waste Processing Works

Mixed C&D processing requires one step that clean concrete recycling does not: a pre-sort. Before feeding the jaw crusher, non-crushable materials must be separated from what the jaw can handle. After that, the circuit is the same as concrete recycling.

Pre-Sort

Separate non-crushable materials before feeding. Concrete, masonry, brick, CMU, and hard rubble go to the feed pile. Drywall, treated lumber, plastics, roofing material, and insulation go to a separate disposal pile. Typically done with an excavator. The cleaner your feed pile, the better your output.

Load

Feed sorted demolition debris into the jaw crusher hopper with an excavator. The CT-740 accepts material up to 28 inches. The CT-850 accepts up to 32 inches. Odd-shaped rubble that won’t fit the jaw opening needs secondary breaking before feeding.

Crush

Material compresses between fixed and moving jaw plates. CSS adjusts hydraulically from the wireless remote. Rebar bends and passes through — the cross-belt magnet on CT-740 and CT-850 separates it. The CT-850 by-pass conveyor routes already-sized material around the jaw chamber.

Screen

Crushed output feeds the CD-410 or CD-516 vibratory screening plant. Mixed C&D output is less uniform than clean crushed concrete. The screening plant sorts into three fractions: fines, middles, and overs. Overs return for a second pass or stockpile as coarse drainage material.

Stockpile

Three fractions stockpile separately. Mixed C&D aggregate is most commonly used as structural fill, drainage aggregate, and sub-base. Output quality from a clean, well-sorted feed is significantly better than output from a poorly sorted feed.

Pre-sort quality directly determines output quality. The jaw crusher processes what you feed it — it does not remove contamination. Invest in the pre-sort and the output value follows.

Mixed demolition debris is the CT-740 and CT-850’s application — the 28-inch and 32-inch jaw openings handle the feed size variation that comes with building teardowns and mixed demolition loads. The CT-535 handles light mixed masonry and concrete but is not the right machine for full commercial C&D processing volume or feed size.

What Processed C&D Debris Is Used For

Mixed C&D aggregate is not a substitute for clean crushed concrete in all applications. Output quality varies with feed consistency — the more uniform and well-sorted your input, the more consistent and valuable your output.
Primary Use

Structural Fill

The most common use. Road base gradation meets structural fill spec for backfill, utility trench bedding, retaining wall backfill, and general grade stabilization. Does not require DOT aggregate spec.
Secondary Use

Drainage Aggregate

Coarser CSS settings produce drainage rock suitable for pipe bedding, french drain aggregate, and stormwater infiltration fill. Coarser and more variable than clean crushed concrete, but functional.
Sub-Base

Sub-Base Fill

Under concrete pours or pavement sections as non-structural sub-base fill. Least sensitive to material variation — fill that will be covered and compacted does not need to be visually clean.
Conditional

DOT Road Base

Well-managed, clean feed (primarily concrete and masonry) may meet road base gradation for some DOT applications. Cannot be guaranteed without material testing. Test before specifying on DOT bid work.

Rebar Scrap

Separated by the cross-belt magnet. On commercial demolition with heavy rebar content, the rebar pile beside the machine is a separate revenue line at current ferrous scrap market rates.

What Affects Output Quality Most

Pre-sort quality. The cleaner the feed going into the jaw, the better the output coming out. Mixed C&D with drywall contamination produces gypsum in the fines fraction that degrades structural fill quality. Plastics in the feed show up in the output. The jaw crusher does not eliminate contamination — it crushes what you put into it.

What Goes Into the Jaw — and What Does Not

The most important operational decision on a C&D processing job is what you put in the crusher. The jaw handles concrete, masonry, brick, CMU, and hard rubble. Everything else needs to come out before feeding.

The pre-sort in practice: On a commercial building teardown, the excavator operator typically does the pre-sort in the act of sorting the debris pile before loading. Concrete and masonry sections go to the crusher feed pile. Drywall, framing lumber, and MEP debris go to a separate disposal pile. On a well-run demolition job, this is not a separate phase — it is part of the demolition sequence. For a C&D processing facility taking in material from multiple sources, incoming loads require inspection and pre-sorting before the crusher. A separate wheel loader or excavator dedicated to pre-sort is standard for facilities running at production volume.

What C&D materials can a jaw crusher process?
