How It Works

How an Air Curtain Burner Eliminates Wood Waste

An air curtain burner is a refractory-lined firebox with a high-velocity air manifold mounted above the opening. The blower forces a horizontal curtain of air across the top of the firebox at high speed. That air curtain does two things: it contains smoke inside the box, and it drives secondary combustion at temperatures above 1,800°F. The result is near-smokeless operation and up to 98% volume reduction. A 200-ton debris pile becomes approximately 2 to 3 tons of ash.
Step 01

Load

Feed logs, limbs, stumps, and brush into the firebox with an excavator or loader. The WX-5 door opening is 6′-3″ high. The WX-8 door opening is the same. Most excavator buckets load directly without pre-processing.
Step 02

Ignite and Establish the Air Curtain

Start the blower engine — 24 HP Yanmar or Kohler on the WX-5, 47.9 HP on the WX-8. Ignite the load. The air curtain establishes within minutes and begins driving secondary combustion. Smoke that would escape in open burning is forced back into the combustion zone and re-burned.

Continuous Burn Cycle

Add material as the load burns down. One operator manages loading and monitors the burn. The WX-5 processes 3 to 6 tons per hour. The WX-8 processes 6 to 9 tons per hour. Fuel consumption is approximately 1 gallon per hour on the WX-5 and 2 to 3 gallons per hour on the WX-8.

Rake and Ash Out

When the burn cycle completes, the ash residue is raked out. A 200-ton debris load produces approximately 2 to 3 tons of ash — roughly 4 to 6 cubic yards. That ash can be spread on-site, blended into screened topsoil, or in some conditions processed into biochar. The volume reduction is the point: what required 8 to 11 haul trips leaves the site in a single bucket.

Why Air Curtain Burners Are Not Open Burning

Open burning produces visible smoke because combustion is incomplete. The Merris air curtain forces secondary combustion at 1,800°F+, re-burning the particulates and gases that would otherwise escape as smoke. This is the mechanism that brings the Merris into compliance with EPA 40 CFR Part 60 — it is not a paperwork designation. The difference is visible in operation.

The weight difference matters.

The WX-5 is approximately 10,000 lbs lighter than a comparable FireBox 100 Series unit. The WX-8 is 12,000 to 16,000 lbs lighter than the FireBox S-220. For a contractor moving a machine between job sites on a regular basis, lighter means lower transport cost, less risk of road restrictions, and faster mobilization. The FireBox 300 Series units (9–13 tons/hr) require oversize permits for transport. Neither the WX-5 nor the WX-8 does.

Open burning is uncontained combustion — the smoke, particulates, and gases escape directly into the air. An air curtain burner uses a high-velocity air manifold to force secondary combustion at temperatures above 1,800°F. That secondary burn re-combusts the particulates and gases before they can escape. The visible result is near-smokeless operation. The regulatory result is EPA 40 CFR Part 60 compliance — the machine meets federal standards that open burning does not.

Can I burn stumps in the Merris WX-5 or WX-8?

Yes. Stumps, root balls, and large-diameter logs are standard material for both the WX-5 and WX-8. The 6’3″ door opening on both models accepts most material without pre-processing. Very large stumps may need to be split or broken before loading, depending on diameter. There is no restriction on green or wet wood — moisture affects burn rate but not compliance.

What materials cannot go in an air curtain burner?
